On April 22, 2010 EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting rule went into full effect. This means that if you are working in a home build before 1978 you must be in compliance with this rule.
Here is a summary of the rule:
Use Renovate Right pamphlet (this brochure can be purchased in packs of 50 at the NARI store here) is implemented through EPA except in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
Renovation Firms must be EPA Certified
Applicable buildings
All pre-1978 rental property
Pre-1978 owner occupied housing
Day Care Centers
Buildings with kindergartens with children under the age of 6
1 person per crew has to have completed 1 day Lead Safe Work training and be a certified renovator
Lead Safe Work practices are required to be used when conducting renovation greater than 6 sq ft per room -interior, 20 sq ft exterior
Windows and demolition work are always applicable
A cleaning verification (not clearance) is required
There are recordkeeping requirements

NARI will then list on its Find a Professional search that your company is a certified firm. NARI National continues to monitor the availability of trainers by state and will continue to provide this information to chapters.

While NARI believes its members will abide by the laws and practice lead safe work practices to the letter, ill-informed, unscrupulous contractors will not and this will create unfair competition in the marketplace. The EPA is launching a broad-based consumer awareness campaign to ensure that the general public understands these requirements.
